Some of those companion pets are cageable (drops or purchased, not the one captured in the wild) and can be sold at the auction house in many cases for over 1.000 G if they are max level (level 25). Those are the companion pet battles and needs be won against other players team (PvP pet battles). You might have notice there’s a weekly quest sometimes (if you are an appropriate level) that says “win 4 pet battles”.
Some people find it really boring but there are many other players that enjoy it. Pet battles are 3v3, so if you want to try that you need to have at least other 2 pets.
But mind, the seemingly harmless creature will bring 2 friends and can kill your companion pets. You capture them by engaging them in a pet battle. They are generally small like critters but there are some bigger exceptions (like the core hound you posses or some dinosaur-like you can capture in Nagrand). They will have a green paw marker on their head if they are capturable. Those companion pets can drop in various activities, bought in certain vendors or can be captured in the wild. All classes can have companion pets but they can only fight in Pet Battles against other pets in the wild (to capture them) or against team of pets from pet master trainers (like Pokémon as someone else wrote) and even crafted with different professions. They get “tamed” in the wild and they are like normal big npc. Only hunters can have combat “animal” pets that help them in PvE or PvP against enemies.
